The origin of green tea can be traced back to China where it was used to treat everything from a minor headache to severe cases of depression. Today, Green tea has achieved worldwide acclaim for its medicinal properties. The reason can be attributed to the fact that green tea is rich in catechin polyphenols, mainly EGCC or epigallocatechin gallate. EGCG is known to be a very potent antioxidant and also inhibits the growth of cancerous cells. It does allow the formation of abnormal blood clots (thrombosis) and also lowers LDL cholesterol levels, thereby decreasing the chances of stroke and heart attacks.
Green tea is more effective than black tea because of the difference in their processing. The processing of black tea helps in fermentation while green tea does not allow it. This is the reason why green tea is rich in anti-oxidants. Green tea has many known benefits.
